Our Mission

Middleburg Academy inspires students to achieve excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics.  We are a dynamic community of students, faculty/staff, parents, and alumni dedicated to lifelong learning, service to others, spiritual growth, and the success of each student. Our school strives to develop young men and women of moral integrity who will be responsible leaders and citizens in a diverse and ever-changing world.

Middleburg Academy interprets “college preparation” in the broadest sense: we prepare our students for the academic demands of higher education, but we also help each to develop his or her own moral compass in preparation for increased independence at college.

This genuine emphasis on developing the whole person – head and heart, intellect and character – is deeply embedded in our rich and varied past. The philosophy was established in 1965, when Notre Dame Academy was founded as a Catholic boarding school for girls; it was there in the 1990s, as we evolved into a coeducational Catholic day school; and it continues to guide a fully secular independent Middleburg Academy.

The Arts

Through the visual and performing arts, students are encouraged to express what is inside of them to the rest of the world. Whether it is through drawing, painting, singing, photography, playing an instrument, writing an original drama or any other creative mode, young adults need healthy ways to announce who they are and what they care about.  Here, in Middleburg Academy’s safe and supportive environment, teenagers are encouraged to test new artistic approaches, study existing creative works, and produce imaginative interactions that represent real communication, in contrast to the virtual connections that often dominate their world.

Some arrive with a talent already discovered:  the pianist who has performed in Austria and Italy, and each weekend attended Johns Hopkins’ prestigious Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore; the outstanding vocalist selected for State and National Honors Choirs; or the young woman with an interest in fashion illustration who went on to design costumes for Broadway. Others uncover gifts they never even knew they had: the basketball superstar whose “Tribal Bowl” won Honorable Mention in a regional art show, or the freshman who signed up for Architectural Drawing I, found his passion, and recently earned a highly coveted spot at Cornell University’s summer architecture program.  Read more.

Regardless of his or her starting point, each student’s artistic expression is nurtured and encouraged at Middleburg Academy as an important step in the development of individual character.

Support Middleburg Academy

The generosity of alumni, parents, trustees and friends is crucial to Middleburg Academy’s advancement. Financial sustainability is an issue for all independent schools today, and our Annual Fund is critical to this end.  There is a significant gap between our tuition income and what it actually costs to operate the school.  Our students and faculty count on you and everyone in the Middleburg Academy community to help make up the difference every year.

The Annual Fund offers you the opportunity to sustain the Academy’s legacy which supports all facets of school life including a broad array of academic, athletic and artistic programs, scholarships for students, and support for our dedicated faculty. Middleburg Academy is a student-oriented community dedicated to helping children prepare for their college careers and life beyond their formal education.

Our sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported Middleburg Academy by giving generously to this extraordinary school.  100% of our students benefit from the quality and character of Middleburg Academy, which is made possible by supporting the Annual Fund.

We encourage you to be a part of the excitement by making a 100% tax-deductible gift to the Annual Fund. You can do so today by using our convenient online giving form, or by calling 540-687-5581 ext. 3033.

On behalf of all the students, faculty, and staff at Middleburg Academy, thank you for your generous support.  Together, we’ll ensure that Middleburg Academy makes a difference to our entire family, every day, and for generations to come.

Yours for Middleburg Academy,

Athletics as Sport

Young adults need many outlets for expression, and sports represent one important and healthy opportunity to do so.  Middleburg Academy’s athletic program is unique to high schools in its encouragement of broad participation and outstanding results.  We consider interscholastic athletics an integral part of the educational experience and field sixteen interscholastic programs in ten different sports. This includes a new equestrian team as well as the fencing club.

Our “no cut” policy means every student is invited to play on a team, regardless of prior experience.  Many students learn to play a sport for the first time, while others go on to play at the college level.

Typically 85% of our student body participates in at least one sport each year, and many play two or even three.  We understand that important lessons take place on the playing fields, as well as in the classroom.  Sports at Middleburg Academy include learning to exert oneself fully, increasing fitness and fortitude, working together as a team, winning or losing with dignity, and balancing sports with other academic commitments.

Broad participation enriches our success.  As testimony to the strength of our athletes and coaches, Middleburg Academy boasts state championships in Boys' Lacrosse, Boys' and Girls' Basketball, Girls' Volleyball and Baseball.  Dedicated coaches also assist individual students in competing for athletic awards and in winning athletic scholarships. Enjoy our Trophy Case.

Middleburg Academy’s playing fields and tennis courts are perfectly situated on our beautiful campus to highlight our breath-taking views.  We also have our own mountain bike/cross-country trail.  Some teams also enjoy superb off-site facilities, including use of the prestigious Creighton Farms as our home golf
