Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Annual Fund?
The Annual Fund supports the current fiscal year’s school operating budget with including expenses for faculty salaries, financial assistance, building maintenance, library books, lab and classroom materials, and utilities. When you give to our Annual Fund, you can be sure your gift is helping students right now!

Doesn’t tuition cover these expenses?
Yes, but only partially.  Tuition covers about 87% of the cost of educating a student at Middleburg Academy. This is in line with other private schools.

How is the remaining 13% covered?
To operate with excellence, we depend on annual gifts from trustees, alumni, parents, most parents of alumni, grandparents of current and former students, current and former faculty and staff, as well as other friends of the school such as community members.

If I can only give a small gift, does it really make an impact?
Yes!  Your gift, combined with those from other alumni, family, and friends, provides substantial support for the ongoing operations of our school. Regardless of the level of the gift, it is an expression of your support.  Every gift is important and every gift is appreciated!

Why does my participation matter?
Participation matters because many foundations only fund schools that can demonstrate wide support from their own alumni, parents, faculty, and administration.  In addition, the costs for running a school and providing a strong academic and arts program increase every year.  To keep Middleburg Academy fiscally healthy, the school needs everyone’s participation, every year.

What is a Leadership Society?
Giving to the Annual Fund each year is extremely important to the ongoing success of the school’s programs, and demonstrates a donor’s commitment to the school.  We recognize this commitment with membership within designated Leadership Levels wherein donors are listed with others who share the same vision for the school.  Our valued Leadership Levels are:

Founders' Circle $10,000 and above
Leadership $5,000 to $9,999
Mary House $2,500 to $4,999
Dragon $1,000 to $2,499
Blue & Gold $500 to $999
Friend $100 to $499
Supporter $1 to $99

What period does the Annual Fund cover:
The Annual Fund starts on July 1 of each year and closes on the following June 30.

How can I make a gift?
Any number of ways, including by check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or securities.   See “How to Make a Gift” or click here to make a gift online.  For more information on making a gift to the Annual Fund, please contact Cindy Fenton, Director of Development and Marketing, at 540-687-5581, ext. 3003 or via email at cfenton@middleburgacademy.org.

Should I consider making a gift of appreciated stocks?
By donating appreciated stocks directly to Middleburg Academy, you can avoid the capital gains tax that would be incurred if you sold the securities.  When a gift of securities is made, donors are entitled to a charitable income tax deduction for the full, fair-market value of the stock for the tax year the gift is made.  The fair-market value is determined by the mean of the high and low sales prices on the date the stock is received by the school.
