Middleburg Academy's Electronics Recycling Drive, held on campus in late April, offered an important service to residents and small businesses in the area and, most importantly, rescued nearly 250 items from the landfill.
Objects collected by the school's Green Club, which hosts the annual event, were in turn donated to Computer Recycling of Virginia Inc. (CRVA), a non-profit organization that refurbishes electronic equipment and donates it to Virginia schools and other not-for-profit community organizations. This year's yield -- which CRVA will later officially report in pounds -- is expected to surpass two tons and last year's record of 3,867 pounds of electronics, set by the local independent high school. Among the hundreds of broken or no-longer-in-use devices received: 18 computer CPUs, 27 keyboards, 15 televisions, 23 speakers, 18 monitors, 16 printers, 11 clock radios and 11 VCR/DVD players.
