“Beyond the academics, I believe the students to be very happy and enjoy their time at the school. When I first started pre-season [field hockey] last fall, I did not know many of the students. The girls got along so well that I could not tell who were the seniors and who were the underclassmen and the new girls. There was incredible absence of seniority and elitism. This remained true throughout the year in that all students got along with each other regardless of their grade or leadership position." - Ruth Marshall

When Ruth Marshall joined the Middleburg Academy faculty last year (2010-11), she arrived with an impressive twenty-five years of teaching experience. From her seasoned perspective, she feels, “Middleburg Academy has a better academic program and better qualified/degreed faculty than the rival schools in the area. Students are very happy to be here and the faculty is outstanding.”
On a personal note, she was heartened when students here readily accepted her as a challenging but fair teacher, someone who genuinely cares about their academic success. Mrs. Marshall is a strong advocate for “writing across the curriculum,” now a hallmark of a Middleburg Academy education. She is also known for employing the five paragraph essay, an assignment that has proven time and again to help students sharpen their writing skills and style.
She and her husband, Levin (“Lee”) Marshall – both Middleburg natives – have two sons, Phil, 21, and George, 14, (a freshman at Middleburg Academy) and a daughter Ashton, 19. Students might be interested to know that Mrs. Marshall became a teacher despite some learning issues of her own. She attended the nearby Foxcroft School. When free time can be found in her busy schedule as teacher/coach/wife/mother, Ruth Marshall loves to cook, garden, and work-out.
"Mrs. Marshall is the special kind of person who will always push someone to be better than their best. She has challenged me to be a better student, a better athlete, and a better leader. She is always willing to go the extra mile for her students, and for that I will always be grateful." - Alex Rossi ‘13
