Rodney Ferguson – who teaches multiple college-level math classes at Middleburg Academy - thinks parents might be interested to know how differently young people today learn math. “We teach much more math now than before (up to BC Calculus or higher) and there is a much greater emphasis placed on understanding concepts and applications, rather than simple ‘plug and chug’.” He enjoys the small school setting of Middleburg Academy and its great student/teacher ratio. One of his ongoing challenges is to balance the needs of the class as a whole while helping the one or two students who might need to see a problem or concept again.
Mr. Ferguson, who is Texas born and bred, has been known to make a horrible joke or pun to grab his students' attention. However, he is not kidding when he says that when he was in high school, he never took any AP classes or AP exams!
