Ask any student at Middleburg Academy, and they will tell you there is never a dull moment in Mr. Horne’s history classes. The energy and passion he brings to his subject is matched only, perhaps, by the enthusiasm of his team on the lacrosse field. He is one of those natural-born educators: always animated and endlessly creative about the topic he is teaching, be it Paleolithic man or life on a medieval manor. An archaeologist at heart, he works to incorporate hands-on activities and primary sources into the curriculum, including archaeological surveys and, much to the chagrin of the school’s cleaning crew, flint knapping lessons. “We have longer educational blocks than when I was a student, so I am able to diversify my lessons, integrate varied activities into my lectures, and successfully avoid academic stagnation amongst my students.” Boredom and stagnation are never an issue as students are inspired to perform plays, skits, and songs (and yes, submit their very best work in exams and essays) to demonstrate their understanding.
Rob Horne grew up in Leesburg, Virginia, and has strong ties to the Loudoun County he “loves dearly.” Most of all, he enjoys spending time with his busy young family: “my amazing wife Kelly,” son Owen (3), and daughter Hallie (1). When given the chance, he hikes, reads, paints, plays video games, and, not surprisingly, lacrosse.
