Having amassed an impressive array of undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate engineering degrees – well beyond what the average high school science teacher holds – Dr. Ann Reimers is more than qualified to prepare her AP Physics seniors for their college courses. Sure enough, former students often report back that they were the only ones in class who could answer a problem posed by a professor. Dr. Reimers attributes this to Middleburg Academy’s small class sizes and the benefits of being able to work with students over multiple years – sometimes as many as four in a row. Students and their parents would add that Dr. Reimers does an amazing job of igniting young minds to explore a variety of research topics. A recent science essay competition, for example, produced student reports ranging from an exploration of synthetic materials being used as bone graft material to an explanation of oncology nano-medicine: how particles at the atomic scale can be manufactured and used as medicine to fight cancer cells explicitly, thus avoiding many side effects caused by current treatments.
Outside the classroom, Dr. Reimers and The Green Club have been busy winning over the entire campus to the idea that small steps can add up to a positive environmental impact. Styrofoam cups and plates are gone from the cafeteria, recycling is now school-wide, and an annual electronics recycling drive re-purposes hundreds of items from the greater community.
Dr. Reimers loves to read and be outdoors at every opportunity. Three sons (Kelly, a senior at Arizona State University; Jackson, a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh; Noah, a freshman in high school) and husband Paul round out the Reimers household.
“Very creative,” “versatile,” “helpful,” “entertaining,” and “extremely knowledgeable,” are adjectives students use to describe Dr. Reimers.
“She makes sure every student grasps and fully understands the topic at hand,” says recent graduate Carleigh Smith (class of 2011). “She would never let a kid slide on by. You can just tell,” she adds, “Dr. Reimers loves teaching here.”
