FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
May all students apply for financial assistance?
Eligible students in Grades 9 through 12 may apply.
What is Middleburg Academy’s philosophy regarding financial assistance?
Tuition assistance at Middleburg Academy is guided by our belief that parents have an obligation to pay the educational expenses of their children to the extent that they are able to do so. Tuition assistance and financial awards are used to fill the gap between the actual cost of a year's tuition and what a family can realistically be expected to pay towards that cost.
Are decisions regarding admission and financial assistance related?
Middleburg Academy’s Admissions Committee initially makes its decisions among all applicants for admission, without regard to financial considerations. Once accepted, students can apply for and may be awarded assistance within the limits of the school’s budget.
Is the financial assistance application process at Middleburg Academy confidential?
All applications for financial assistance are held in the strictest confidence. Only the members of the Admissions and Financial Aid Committee have access to the records.
How is financial assistance determined?
All families applying for financial aid are required to complete the application process online at the FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment website - click here to apply. You can search for Middleburg Academy on the FACTS website using the school's zip code: 20117. The FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment Parent Helpline phone number is 866-315-9262. The Helpline is available from 11 am - 8 pm EST, but families are also encouraged to contact the Middleburg Academy Admissions Office directly with any questions at 540-687-5581, ext. 3008 or cbritton@middleburgacademy.org.
Should I apply for assistance?
Some families find it a challenge to pay independent school tuition. Most adjust their spending priorities, maximize both parents’ earnings, and carefully manage assets to do so. Some will need financial assistance no matter how carefully they fine-tune family finances. We would like to provide firm guidelines to help you decide whether to apply for assistance, but have found that each family’s combination of circumstances is unique. The most helpful guidelines will come from further knowledge of your family’s finances. Family assets, the number of children in the family, the number of children in tuition-charging schools, and many other factors will influence the likelihood of your receiving assistance and the actual size of the allocation.
Does Middleburg Academy offer loans to finance the Academy’s tuition?
Currently, no loans are available through the Academy to finance tuition. However, we do suggest that you consider speaking with your banker or accountant about creative ways to finance your child’s education.
How do I begin the process?
Check “yes” in response to the question, “Do you intend to apply for Financial Assistance?” on the Middleburg Academy application. This will alert Admissions to your desire for consideration of financial assistance should the applicant(s) be accepted. During the admission process, please review the steps for applying for financial assistance.
What deadlines do I need to be aware of?
All documents to be used for consideration need to be submitted to FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment by March 15th.
What happens if our family misses the stated application deadlines?
In general, the financial assistance awarded in March more closely meets family need than for students who apply in late spring and summer months. If, however, a student is accepted into school after March, their application for financial assistance will be considered until such time when all funds have been allocated. This is in no way meant to deter families from applying for financial assistance after the deadlines. Applications for enrollment are accepted by the Academy for Regular Admission February 1st and Secondary Admission May 1st. Middleburg Academy tries to meet family needs as best as possible.
When will we be notified if we have received an award?
Financial Assistance decisions are sent to the parents beginning in early spring. Your attention to meeting all deadlines allows for the committee to address your application in a timely fashion.
We simply can’t pay the tuition you expect of us. Is it possible to appeal our Middleburg Academy financial assistance allocation?
Yes. What we need is new information in writing. If you feel that you have omitted or not appropriately clarified specific information, mention this first in your appeal for reconsideration. It often helps to include copies of recent pay stubs from both earners, a detailed list of family monthly expenses, or other specific and telling documentation that will allow the committee to understand your situation more completely.
What are the expectations of families who receive financial assistance?
None that are different from any other family at Middleburg Academy. Each family is asked to participate to the fullest extent possible through both volunteer and financial resources. Every family is asked to contribute to the Annual Fund at a level which is comfortable for them.
