Advanced Courses

Middleburg Academy’s advanced course offerings are unique among independent high schools in the area.  In addition to Advancement Placement (AP) and Honors classes, we also offer, right here on campus through our own highly qualified faculty, a spectrum of college level Dual Enrollment (DE) courses through Virginia’s public colleges and universities.  DE credits earned in high school (see below for further details) are accepted by all of Virginia’s public universities as well as other private and public colleges across the country at which our students matriculate.

Both AP and DE courses represent the most rigorous level of academic work available to secondary school students.  Both AP and DE courses are equally respected in the college admission process as evidence of challenging study.  Credits and advanced standing from secondary-school AP exams and DE courses can offer the student chances to accelerate or enrich study in a favorite field, to bypass introductory-level courses, to have extra time to take interesting courses outside one’s major area of study, to abbreviate the time required for graduation, and possibly to lighten the expenses of college.  Click here for the 2011-12 Course Selection Guide, offering full details on all classes.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES
AP courses are taught according to college-level curricula and standards, by instructors approved by the College Board.  Middleburg Academy requires AP course students to sit for their AP exams in May.

Advanced Placement Courses. The school offers AP/College Calculus AB; AP/College Calculus BC; AP/College English Literature and Composition; AP/College Physics C Mechanics; AP Spanish Language; AP Studio Art; AP United States Government and Politics; AP United States History; and AP World History, all certified by the College Board.

DUAL ENROLLMENT (DE) COURSES
Under an agreement between Middleburg Academy and Virginia’s public colleges and universities, and through our instructors who are also certified as adjunct professors, we are able to offer nine Dual Enrollment courses.  All fifteen of Virginia’s public universities grant credit for DE courses completed with a grade of C or higher and incorporate that course into the student’s college transcript and GPA.  Private in-state colleges as well as public and private colleges in other states almost always grant credit for Middleburg Academy’s DE courses.

Dual Enrollment Courses for College Credit:  The school offers College Applied Calculus (6 college credits); College Biology (8); AP/College Calculus AB (4); AP/College Calculus BC (4); AP/College English Composition and Literature (6); College French (6); AP/College Physics C Mechanics (4); College Probability and Statistics (3); and College Drawing and Painting (3).
